For Steve and Joe.

Reading your complaint and solution my hub has been dropping out for the last 12 months but been working through it. Demanded two new hubs and got them, amazing from their brief they try to blame computers of which we have three, can't all be US.
Everytime I telephone BT INDIA it comes back on and I am now aware that to bring it back online all I have to do is press the green button on my handset, get a dialing tone and I am back on, no need to make a call. Just done it again as I went off line whilst writing this memo.
BT engineer coming AM tomorrow 270408.

Yes I agree the 2.91 is even more flaky, on the old version it locked up about once a day now it locks up very frequently . The software seems downright ropey, tis a shame as it could have been really good, only option is to go for sky ..

I set up my bt homehub on my laptop using ethernet, i now use it wirelessly but i have a problem.... I pay my electricity bill by cards, this means as the card runs out my electric goes out, which i then will top up and the electric comes back on, but my laptop then wont connect wirelessly with my hub.... which is annoying as my husbands works straight away =[
I then have to plug my laptop in using the "Ethernet" cable and log on, i usually mess around for a couple of minutes changing stuff and then changing it back, so nothing is really changed, but it seems to do the trick... suddenly I'm back on line.... but how can i avoid all this, as it takes ages, i just want to be online...HELP!
Anyone?

Re security, it is 100% safe. Everything goes through a separate channel. The only thing that is shared is the phone line. The broadband and the wireless are completely separate.

Anyway, I love FON!
It doesn't take the full 1/2 meg if you only have 2.5meg. It dynamically adjusts the allowance so that you have priority.

This is the way forward for wireless broadband. Forget 4G and HSPDA. When the BT 21st Century Network comes online, they'll be able to up its speed as well and make it far faster than these.
The benefits gained for the loss of up to half a meg are great.

Free openzone (normally £1 per 10mins) AND free connection to all other FON users (only available if you sign up).

At the end of the day, if for some strange reason you don't like the idea. Don't sign up. BT aren't forcing you to after all!

Not to mention it's a noisy beast, takes more than 45 seconds to come back online after power-cycling, and - if the measurements on "Radio and Telly" can be believed, uses a full 17 watts even on standby... My LAPTOP doesn't even need that much juice!

Hrm. I'm in two minds as whether to copy Jon, there. Given the quite laughable recording time compared to claims (less than 40 hours i'd reckon), I'm using it more as a timeshifting device to slurp interesting repeat series out of the freeview channels (Dave, Five US, ITV4 etc) then dump them onto VHS. Which works... fairrrly well. But it still has the stupid glitches - missing or corrupt or mistimed recordings, occasional lockups, series link stupidity, inability to seek, etc.

I'm going to push Thomson to see if any updates are going to be forthcoming any time soon to fix this nonsense (even if they have to be put on a USB stick, or floppy disc via a USB drive)... If not, then I'll probably be looking for a more expensive (but better value) Freeview-only PVR - or ditching it altogether for a V-box, as we still have a vestigial Virgin cable box hanging around - and returning the Thomson to Tesco after retrieving anything of value from it.

Luckily I haven't yet been tempted to either upgrade the hard disc, or extract programmes direct to DVD using my computer, so the sanctity of it's case and warranty are assured.

Stability fixes? I wonder under what circumstances they would apply? My TUTV+ box is, if anything, less reliable since going to v2.91... I'm getting to the point where I've ended up here because I'm looking for potential fixes (and contact details for Thomson) because it's so chronic. Given that this is the only device available to access this service, you'd think they'd have made it a bit more solid in order to hang on to custom vs cable and satellite...

Oddly enough I do live in the Sutton area, and previously had some wierd issues with the signal strength checker going bananas when going up/down channels, I'll have to test that and see if it's improved (not needed to play with it for a while since I found my aerial was misaligned and got it properly aimed at the transmitter).

It's still missing recordings for no reason (at least issuing a warning message, but that's still no substitute for the programme I'd wanted to watch), creating recordings that are so corrupt that they make the box freeze solid if you try to view them or even leave the highlight on their title for more than a second in the list (made deleting it kinda tricky), getting confused over timings and recording two and a quarter hours for a one-hour programme (with the target one occupying the last 60 minutes, not the first, so you have to fast forward to get to it ... and if you go over 8x seek, it freezes), being completely confounded by the concepts of "fast forward" and "rewind", only displaying the progress bar at random, etc. Sometimes it will refuse to actually record something when you hit the "record" button at the start of an unexpected programme, even though the icon comes up on screen after you've done the silly "hold it for 4 seconds" thing... the red LED doesn't come on, and it doesn't record, you have to actually go into the EPG and set it as a 'planned' recording, even though it's already started. Not to mention we'd be lucky to get 60 hours of recording overall from this "120 hour" machine - some of those 2 1/4 hour recordings seemingly took up 6 hours of space, given how the "free space" reading jumped when they were deleted.

Just crap. Want a refund. Don't actually give a toss about TUTV, it was just the cheapest PVR around... and we didn't even get what we paid for. The 10-year-old VHS tape recorder sat next to it (that i've been archiving series onto), which cost £49, exhibits none of these issues. It has no frills, it just bloody works. Why can't the PVR do similar?

(I'm copying this to notepad to use in any email I might end up sending them, in fact)

Steve sound like you might have a bad line and the phone call is clearing the static. I had been suffering similar problem ever since moving to the Max broadband however just managed to prove to BT that was the case, this was helped graetly using a bit of free software to monitor the router. The BT line engineer swapped my line for a new pair and I've not had a drop out since.
Have a look a this website below.

I'm also having problems with my BT Home Hub. It keeps dropping the connecting and the only way to get connected again is to make a call from my landline to my mobile? Only found this out by accident after waiting 2 hours and re-booting on numerous occasions! Also my Wii cannot connect?

the closing of the jazz is very disappointing as I used to listen when I was in bed. They keep saying to tune into Classic fm, but I dont want to listen to classical music, so why offer that as an alternative?

Will any other station play jazz

Well finally had enough of this totally pants product and returned it to John Lewis after 7 months, who instantly gave a refund. They informed me that they have had so many return they've discontinued them and put them on 'refund on return to store'. They've practically had every one returned with some fault. What a totally dreadful product. I strongly recommend that if you have a faulty unit (which it looks like most of you do), that you return them for a refund and buy a different model. Bought a 'Topfield'. More expensive, but my god it works with no fuss what's so ever (and has top up tv). Good luck all & bye bye.
