Damn. Ferguson FDT500 still working but MUX 1 channels stuffed in the 8xx range. So I decided the outdoor aerial was tired and bought a good wideband one for the loft. 10km from Blue Bell Hill and I dont do heights. Most evenings I lose the BBC chanels and I now know this is a common problem. No improvements so I have been moving the new aerial around the loft into some far reaching corners. Last far reaching corner I tried has no boards.....

I now have a permanent reminder of what a mess Freeview is in my mothers bedroom ceiling. I have already wasted a lot of time and effort but I have not lost my temper yet. But when I am convinced about who to blame words will not be enough, there will be REVENGE. That dameged ceiling is going to be there for a long time.

hi all,had all the same problems,but fixed most myself,top up tv cancelled.took box apart removed all connectors,used compressed air aerosole to clean out connectors and made sure all connections were remade correctly,this cured most of the freezin and picture break up.problem seems to be poor quality connections that are either not done properly at factory or they creep when box is moved about.
this solved 80% of the problems,adding a digital ariel booster has improved picture break up further even tho the signal quality and strength show very little improvement.
after doing all of this, box was much much better,being able to watch programes and record,with very little freezin or break up.however is was still not happy so i took it all apart again,this time i removed the motherboard and redid alot of the solder connections.i would now say that the box is 95% better.i dont think that i could get it 100% as this box has been made down to a price.but now the problems are only occassional and i have a usable piece of equipment.
it is a shame about all the inbuilt problems,because when it works as it should it is very good.
altho you shouldn't have to.these fix's are very easy to do if you feel confident taking things apart,if not you may know someone who could help.i cant promise that will get the same results but could be worth a try.however please ensure that the power is not connected before you start.
hope that some of you find this helpfull.

Thomson DTI6300 - well, I wish I had come across these comments before buying this junk! It is quite unbelievable that in the year 2010, stores like Tesco are allowed to sell this kind of simply unusable rubbish.
The people who designed the box should be on the dole right now ... the reliability is simply abysmal:
it is freezing up, it is randomly ignoring/losing recordings, the display has "hiccups" (irritating pauses) etc.
User friendliness is another idea the Thomson experts obviously never heard of, just one example here:
there is one (!) red LED indicating the recording status of two channels, so the user has to guess what is happening. Or go through various sub-menus to investigate. For goodness' sake, add another blooming LED for 2 pence so that there is one for each channel!
There are other signs of programming incompetence, esp. in the way the EPG panel behaves .... can't be bothered listing them here, the crappy box is going back today.
In case you were wondering, the software version in my box is 5.08, ie. the latest creation. I think they should get some schoolkids to do the programming for them.

Having since looked on the web, it has been confirmed that existing Freeview boxes/TV's, will not be able to receive HD, but will still be able to receive standard Freeview that will still be transmitted. TV's with the new HD Freeview are expected to be on the market sometime in April 2010. Fingers crossed my old Philips CRT will not die before then.

Hi everyone. I'm back after some 18 months with details of another Freeview scam that is about to unfold. It appears that when the new HD Freeview is launched in the early summer/late spring, there is a very good chance that existing Freeveiw boxes and more importantly, HD ready TV's with Freeview, will not be able to receive HD. Also it is not very clear if existing freeview boxes/TV's, will continue to work !!!!!!!!!! I was going to replace my 13 year old CRT very soon, which is dying, but given this latest info, will now try and hang on until the new TV's with HD Freeview have been launched.

I'm a MAC covert and will never go back. Superb systems well build and stable, easy to setup and use. Only big problem that I have is that I have to use Office to keep 100% computability with work stuff. Unfortunately this is rather buggy - oh yes it comes from Microsoft!

Hi Carl and Pete,

Love the show, keep up the arguments...v amusing.

Well my take on this is your argument is too broad a scope for any real instant evaluation.

consider this:

Yes Windows has far more users, many like myself begrudgingly forced, through business sector penny pinching procurement officer Bureaucracy.

America probably has the general image of being more 'Maccy' due to it being the corporations natural home. Indeed product placement in films and TV both the here and there is on the up (though James Bond definitely isn't a Mac...Sony vio). Apple macs are just cool looking pieces of kit, thats it..end of..no question, hence their use to make things look cool. A British film recently screened on CH4 'Breaking and entering' with Jude Law and Ray Winston had a scene when Ray (the Detective investigating the series of robberies) states 'Macs eh...lovely pieces of kit..you gotta love em' or words to that effect. If anyone can find that snippet please? A blog i recently scanread stated that the blogger had noticed at a recent computer security conference how ironic it was to see all these company data security experts using Macs. Agreed, they aren't the cheapest of options..I say you get what you pay for.

PC's have their place in the world of computing and provide an important cheap alternative to home users and the business sector who have long term goals with short term hardware requirements to cut costs. In my experience working in IT, people who can afford Macs and justify the expense..always go Mac. Those that cannot justify or afford the extra expense buy a PC, but wish they could get a Mac. Some are just plain scared and suspicious of anything new and go with what they know.

In the UK and America consider that nearly all common media you are exposed to, at one point, was either conceived or processed on a Mac. Thats a lot of users. Yes even your own podcast...what servers do you think iTunes use to store your xml metadata to download your show? Definitely NOT a Dell!

so in a nutshell what I'm trying to say is (Carl, I'm trying really hard to be neutral here)...it depends on what you intend to use your computer for, financial constraints and preference as to who uses what. I'd say the balance is tipping in the younger generation, who generally lead the consumer market and generally are incredibly media literate. So the Mac is catching up.

Media=Mac
Business=PC

America and Britain use both Macs and PC's. DRAW.

regards:

Jon Eastoe ACTC.

p.s Lets make a feature of:

'What can Carl drop down the toilet this week...fish or flush and will it still work??"

p.p.s I voted for you.....where's my Toblerone?

Hi Carl and Pete,

Well my take on this is your argument is too broad a scope for any real instant evaluation.

consider this:

Yes Windows has far more users, many like myself begrudgingly forced, through business sector penny pinching procurement officer Bureaucracy.

America probably has the general image of being more ‘Maccy’ due to it being the corporations natural home. Indeed product placement in films and TV both the here and there is on the up (though James Bond definitely isn’t a Mac…Sony vio). Apple macs are just cool looking pieces of kit, thats it..end of..no question, hence their use to make things look cool. A British film recently screened on CH4 ‘Breaking and entering’ with Jude Law and Ray Winston had a scene when Ray (the Detective investigating the series of robberies) states ‘Macs eh…lovely pieces of kit..you gotta love em’ or words to that effect. If anyone can find that snippet please? A blog i recently scanread stated that the blogger had noticed at a recent computer security conference how ironic it was to see all these company data security experts using Macs. Agreed, they aren’t the cheapest of options..I say you get what you pay for.

PC’s have their place in the world of computing and provide an important cheap alternative to home users and the business sector who have long term goals with short term hardware requirements to cut costs.

Yes even your own podcast…what servers do you think iTunes use to store your xml metadata to download your show? Definitely NOT a Dell!

so in a nutshell what I’m trying to say is (Carl, I’m trying really hard to be neutral here)…it depends on what you intend to use your computer for, financial constraints and preference as to who uses what. I’d say the balance is tipping in the younger generation, who generally lead the consumer market and generally are incredibly media literate. So the Mac is catching up.

Media=Mac
Business=PC

America and Britain use both Macs and PC’s. DRAW.

regards:

Jon Eastoe ACTC.

p.s Lets make a feature of:

‘What can Carl drop down the toilet this week…fish or flush and will it still work??”

p.p.s I voted for you…..where’s my Toblerone?

I've got a Krups Dolce Gusto coffee machine and I would recommend it to anyone. Considering the relatively low price compared to some of the fancier machines for afficianados (from the likes of Lavazza and Gaggia) I think it makes a very nice cup of coffee. You can get about nine different varieties of coffee and unlike some of it's competitors (Tassimo, Senseo) it has 15 bar pressure.
