You asked what our thoughts on the new format of the Gadget Show. Well to be polite “Poo”

The part last week where they were reviewing 3D TV in full sun on the back of a boat was utterly stupid.

They have got rid of the lovely Suzi and the sensible John Bentley

This is just an excuse for Jason & Polly to have a good time.

As always I time shift it so that can wiz through the non-interesting parts but now I only watch about 10% where before it was about 70%

I hope it does not re commissioned in this format

There is a need for a tech show, maybe you guys should be seen!
Freesat boxes do have one input, although if you get a Freesat PVR you will need both co ax feeds as you can record two programmes at once whilst watching a previous recording.

Studon

Your TV and Tech Questions - Triax Tri-link (FrequencyCast Show 56)

Hi! I recently purchased a Triax Tri-linx off the back of the review in podcast Show 56 in order to carry out a few functions (described below). I am positive that the Triax should fulfil all the functions, but I am struggling to get it set up

I have the following set up for my TV:

- two satellite cables coming down from the , coax cable, 8-way aerial booster - these are housed in a living room cupboard on the opposite wall to the TV (ie behind the sofa). This cupboard houses a Sky HD box and BlueRay player.

- Two HDMI cables and a coax cable which run from the cupboard to my TV (on the wall in front of the TV).
- a magic eye connected to the TV and the coax cable.
- TV has Freeview built in.

Until a couple of weeks ago, using my SkyBox, I had the following setup:

-coax cable from the aerial running into the Sky RF In.

-I used the 9V power generated by the RF Out of my Sky HD box to send TV analogue signals and power from the Sky box to the magic eye and TV (via the booster). In this way, I was able to point the remote at the TV to change Sky channels (instead of opening the cupboard and turning around on the sofa to point the remote at the Sky box.

-Sending the signal via the booster also meant that I was able to watch Sky in other rooms around the house, as well as change channels using magic eyes on the other TVs.

Having finally said goodbye to Sky and hello to FreeSat (BTW, which is great), I bought a PVR to do the job my Sky Box did. I knew that there are no analogue functions on most PVRs, so bought the Tri-link thinking that this would solve my problems (the problems being: to use a magic eye on the TV in my living room; boosting the signal around the house and using separate eyes elsewhere). I actually thought the Tri-link would improve my earlier set up, because I previously had to open the cupboard door to use the BlueRay, but with the Triax I should be able to also control the BlueRay (which is a Panasonic to go with my Plazma TV) through the magic eye.

I have tried just about every cable in every combination of the Triax, using a Scart to the Blue Ray and also direct to the PVR, but I cannot seem to get the magic eye or the booster set up to work. Please can someone more capable than me give me instructions on which cables to put where……

You might get the BBC World Service - these days, it's almost entirely news - and, in Africa, it would occasionally opt out of mainstream broadcasts and give you stuff in the local language - as for the internet - I was in The Gambia a few years back - the only places that you can surf the net is internet cafés - which aren't cheap!

Not sure if a stick would even work, as I think it would need a wireless hotspot - not much call for them in the middle of the Sahara Desert or the jungle!

There are a lot of online sites that permit you to download software that supposedly lets you watch online streams, but most of the channels appear to not have anything on them, or a loop of its breakfast show. And they have the bare-faced cheek to CHARGE for it!

Even those that do have a stream of broadcast material is geo-locked to its own country - and, even then, the moment a film or imported programme comes on, the stream cuts out and doesn't cut back in until the end!

I'm actually reading eBooks on an Ipod touch, the screen's a bit small, but it works out pretty well, and before that i read on my mobile (txt files)..the screen was even tinier.
So i don't think it's worth investing in an ebook reader, if you have a smartphone/ipod touch..

I am not into sport - but, for the most part, sport in general is almost inaccessible - most of it, the rights have been secured by Sky, and you have to pay through the nose to see it live. Whatever sport terrestrial television is allowed to show, you have to watch it live - the iPlayer - or even the other channels' equivalents - only lets you watch largely home-grown up-to-date comedy, drama and the odd documentary - not news or sport.

Even live football - especially the Premiership - the rights to radio commentary have been secured exclusively by the relevant local stations, allowing listeners on internet radio to - or, so they would have us believe - hear commentary of matches from outside our geographical location - this, however, is not the case, as, just before the match kicks off, the station then cuts out and a generic loop plays, saying some nonsense about being unable to bring us the current programme - then when the station eventually kicks back in, the match is long over!

So Pete, are you going to get the new iPad?

The press seem a little frosty about it but they all seem to wow at the new retina display. In general it doesn't seem much of an update but what else can they do with that damn thing.

It amazes me how the press expect every product update to be a born again iPad and then ridicule companies for trying something different like the samsung galaxy beam.

Oooh that has given me another suggestion for a show feature!!!

Dan

Hi Pete, Carl and the FC team,

Just want to say thanks for Pod 73, some really interesting stuff on it.

I especially liked the feature on future homes as I sort of dabble in this arena with work. We are using a technology that was designed for domestic/commercial buildings and it is a wireless technology that doesn't use batteries. The technology has been used for light switches, motion sensors, thermostats etc. but they are now starting to get even more clever with bi-directional transmission. I work with a couple of Building Management System engineers and the things that they can do are pretty impressive but uptake is pretty slow here in the UK but maybe the 15 Years that Nick talks about we may see this sort of tech a little more mainstream.

I like these sort of features that look at what the future holds for tech, you kind of get an idea what the companies are working on.

A suggestion maybe for a future show would be to look at other sectors where future tech will change the way we live our lives. One that is quite interesting is cars and what tech we could see proving popular there. I know there was a bit shown at MWC.

Just going back to what Nick was saying about TVs and I agree with some of what he was saying but I do see the TV taking on a bigger role than just offering programming content. I think for the every day user of a PC a lot of that functionality could be seen within a tv set, web browsing, sending email, social media, skype. For families that just use a PC for that then the TV is the perfect platform as long as they can sort out input devices.

That takes me nicely on to the Playbook feature and firstly thanks for the mention. At the risk of starting to sound like a Playbook Fanboy one great feature with OS 2 is that I can use my Blackberry phone as 2 bluetooth input devices for my playbook. For instance I could hook up the playbook to the TV via HDMI and then use my blackberry phone to control the Playbook from where I am sitting. So on my tv I have all the features of the Playbook controlled by my phone, I can the phone as a touchpad mouse with schrolling features and can use the keyboard on my phone to enter text etc.

Look forward to hearing more about the Raspberry Pi computer, a guy I know has one on back order and he is going to trial one at an after school club he runs...believe it or not he teaches Software Engineering to primary school kids!!!

Anyway chaps thanks again for the pod and keep up the great work.

Dan

I have now had a reply from Samsung:

Dear Dan,

Thank you for contacting Samsung and I have pleasure in providing the following assistance.

I am sorry this information is not more available to you.

I understand that this situation must be frustrating.

We have known about this problem with the BBC iplayer app and have asked its respective broadcaster to investigate the issues further and release a fix to us so that we can then release that fix onto our customers.

The fix for the BBC iplayer app has been released on some Samsung platforms and should be released on the rest of our platforms in the coming days & weeks. If you are connected online you will be prompted when this new software is available.

I am afraid that Netflix has only released an app that the D7000 and D8000 televisions are capable of supporting. Samsung have no control over the design of the app Netflix produces.

At some point Netflix may release an app that Internet@ TV specification Samsung televisions are capable of supporting, but I am afraid that we have no inforamtion on this at present.

I am sorry I couldn't be of more help.

If you require any further assistance, please contact Samsung again and we will be more than happy to help.

Kind regards

James
Online Support Team
SAMSUNG Customer Support Centre

So I guess we have just to wait for it

Dan

Currently have a fetchtv 8000 and despite its quirks provides alot of features. Still now freeview hd is coming thought i would get a hd tv with a hd pvr.

Wouldnt it be nice if it allowed me to wirelessly stream media from my pc. Allow me to play content from iplayer, 4od, itv player and demand 5. It seems YouView box would give me the latter but they have gone awfully quiet. Oh yes, did I say I would like to play stuff from Netflix or Lovefilm.

Don't think this box exists but just wondered.

Maybe after wednesday we may know what Apple plans in this arena.

Rob

Have anyone released the actual broardcast times for the events yet?
I know when the events are happening live, but most "free to air" coverage is recorded, and re-broadcast. I usually end up chasing around trying to find brief coverage of most of the minority events that i'm intrested in. A bit of warning from the BBC would be nice.
I hope our Summer games, don't turnout like the canidian winter coverage. Carved up in a bidding war with no coverage free public TV of the minority stuff here that I could find.

Not sure if you guys got your hands on a BB Playbook but OS 2.0 comes out on Tuesday next week and it promises to blow the socks off the iPad!!!

It might be worth doing a round-up of the new features, I guess there are a few more out there due to the low prices.

I have had one for a couple of months now and am really impressed, next week we should get the Android player for the Playbook bringing a lot of new apps to the Playbook.

Keep up the good work fellas,

Dan

Hi Alan,

Big fan of the Squeezebox. Slightly clunky, I do agree, but great sound. I don't get any buffering problems, but I have a decent broadband connection. Might be worth checking your speed and network. Sorry, no experience of the mini boombox, but maybe a listener does...

When I added another TV to Freesat I decided to run an extra single cable to it via my a Foxat HD. I notice that the PVR in the other room has dual cables. I now find that I would like a PVR for my second TV but wonder what functionality I would get with only the one feed cable?

I have just bought a swap classic and love it to bits. However I have cunningly changed the phone lock from the default 1122 to a random number which I can not remember. Now all i get when i switch it on is a request for the password. I can't get into any menus to reset it or anything.
Does anyone have and ideas how I can solve this one?
(Banging head against wall for not using a number i would remember!)
Thanks for your time in reading this!

Is there anyone in the Chatham area able to give some time to help kick off a charity podcast? It is for breast cancer awareness. I just need a little help and advice about equipment and software. I have a URL and little hosted website but need to know how to start linking it all together.
Many thanks.
