Crystal Balls At The Ready:

For our March 2012 show, we gaze 15 years into the future, Tomorrow's World style, to see how technology will be changing our home lives.

Broadband Provider Plusnet commissioned the think tank, Centre for Future Studies, to look at the house of 2027, and the report produced some interesting and thought-provoking findings.

The report, entitled "The homepage of our lives", was written by a team headed by Dr Frank Shaw, who has been described by Time Magazine as one of the 10 most influential thinkers in the world, and it reveals that the Internet will include everything from smart appliances that talk to each other, to clothes that monitor our health. Other interesting predictions include front doors that can use facial recognition, cars that can't crash, to toilets that analyse your waste to check for illness warning signs.

The findings also highlight that there are over 8 million adults in the UK who have never used the Internet... a worryingly high number. By 2027, cheques and cash could be a thing of the past, and if you can't get online, you may be excluded from voting, banking, shopping, or even from society itself. As Dr. Frank Shaw says: "The illiterate of the 21st Century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot access the Internet."

The Report Explored

We caught up with Nick Rawlings, the Commercial and Marketing Director for Plusnet, to discuss the report's findings, and the future of the Internet. The feature had to be shortened for inclusion in show 73, but on this page, you'll find the full version of our audio feature, as well as the image of the "House of 2027" as discussed in the feature:

We'd like to thank Plusnet for giving us access to the report, and to Nick Rawlings for sparing the time to discuss the report's findings. We'll be calling Nick in 15 years to see how the predictions turned out!
