Happy Towel Day

Posted on 25 May 2010 By FrequencyCast 3 Comments on Happy Towel Day

TowelsA reminder that today is “Towel Day“. We hope our listeners all have their towels or modified face flannels stowed in their satchels today.

No idea what we’re talking about? Shame on you! A towel is probably the most handy thing you can own. “A man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still knows where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with”.

Today is marked by fans of the wholly remarkable radio series, The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, as Towel Day. The date commemorates two weeks after the author, Douglas Adams, ascended to the Restaurant at the End of the Universe, on 11th May 2001.

In searching to see which of the newspapers have mentioned Towel Day, the Telegraph referred me to an article written by Douglas in 1999 – It’s well worth a read: How to stop worrying and learn to love the Internet.

We’d also like to point to a rather good deal on the radio series (the original and best Hitchhikers version) – All five series of the radio series can be purchased for £36 (saving £44), from Play.com. There’s a bonus CD of extras and behind-the-scenes stuff too. Free postage and packing all the way from Ursa Minor.

Once again, happy Towel Day to you all, and Don’t Panic!

Arthur Dent: You know, if this is Southend, there’s something very odd about it.

Ford Prefect: What, you mean the way the sea stays steady as a rock and the buildings keep washing up and down? Yes, I thought that was odd.

Southend-on-Sea… The rich primal greens… the river snaking off into the distance… the burning pier…
