Addicted to updates

Posted on 7 August 2008 By FrequencyCast 2 Comments on Addicted to updates

Come on… this has to be an officially-recognised condition…

Check For Updates

Update addiction.

If you’re guilty of any of the following, you qualify as an addict:

  • Pressing the Check for Updates button whenever you load software
  • Going to Windows Update, just in case you’ve missed one
  • Using a service like File Hippo Update to check which installed piece of software you’ve not updated for a while
  • Plugging your sat-nav in to a PC every few days to see if there’s a new map or a new speed camera to download
  • Rushing out to buy an iPhone 3G even though your 2.5G one’s less than a year old
  • Getting excited about seeing an update to your digital TV set-top box
  • Upgrading your mobile phone 366 days after your contract expires
  • Regretting installing an update that was unnecessary and has introduced more problems than it solved

You have to admit – it’s a bit of an odd addiction, but one many of us techies are guilty of – some to the point of OCD.

Why do so many of us suffer from this? Why, in our forums, do we see so many pushing for new software updates, then berating the manufacturers for not adding more functionality, and for introducing new and exciting new defects for us?

There may be no cure… but is there a name for this addiction? Comments?
