In March 2010, the FrequencyCast team were out and about at the Dabs.com Live Gadget show in London’s Wembley Stadium. Here’s a transcript of our interview with Warren Mariott recorded at the show

LinkStation Live Summary:

Pete:

I’m talking to Warren from Buffalo, who’s all about data storage, isn’t that right, Warren?

Warren:

That’s correct, yes, that’s what we’re here promoting today.

Pete:

So we did a feature a couple of shows ago about back up solutions, and this one here has caught my eye – which unit am I holding here?

Warren:

That’s a product called the LinkStation Live, it comes in four capacities: 500 GB, 1 tera, 1.5 and 2 terabytes.

Buffalo LinkStation Live

Pete:

And you were telling me earlier, this has got a rather clever power saving feature?

Warren:

Yes, on the back basically there’s an on/off and auto switch, it basically enables us to, when it’s on auto, it has an eco-friendly position in mind, so when users enter the network and start logging on, it’s clever enough to recognise how many people are on the network, and then, when you log off at the end of the day, it basically closes the drive down, it never turns it off, it’s there in the background waiting for someone to action the drive, as soon as the drive’s been actioned, the drive starts to spin and it’s ready to work.

Pete:

A USB port on the back – what would that be for?

Warren:

The USB port, for three functions: one is additional storage, so we do a product called the Drive Station, which you can back up the data that’s connected to this drive; another reason is we can have a network printer, and then we can have additional storage, so if you’ve got two terabyte, and you want to add another two terabyte, you can simply via a USB connect another drive to this, and have four terabytes of data on a network.

Pete:

And you were saying, this has got a handy little feature for those interested in internet content?

Warren:

Yes, there’s a BitTorrent client built into the drive itself, so you can instruct the PC to do a download, then basically turn the PC off and let the NAS box take over.

Pete:

Nice – a clever little solution. Anything else clever this does?

Warren:

We’ve got a web feature called Buffalo NAS, you basically register your NAS box with Buffalo, and we have a free web browser facility, so basically set up a user name and password. Provided the drive’s always on, you can remotely access that drive from anywhere in the world.

Pete:

Wow, OK, so it’s not storing it on the Cloud, it’s actually, you can log in from a web browser and actually get direct access to the files on here?

Warren:

Yes, that’s correct.

Pete:

Excellent, OK, so just remind me of the product name on this one again?

Warren:

The product you’re holding is called the LinkStation Live.

Pete:

And can you give me a feel for the price?

Warren:

Rough street price right now is around £120 mark.

Pete:

You’ve also got a couple of other boxes here, this is obviously the top end NAS storage system – is that right?

Warren:

Yes, a product called the TeraStation, it comes in three flavours: we’ve got a TeraStation Duo with two drives, and a TeraStation ES and TeraStation III. They’re high end business products.

Pete:

Nicely RAIDed up, are they?

Warren:

Yeah, RAID 5 ready out the box.
