FrequencyCast Trials British Gas Remote Heating Control

British Gas LogoIf you caught FrequencyCast Show 76, you’ll have heard our team discussing a range of new British Gas products that are designed to help us poor consumers take greater control of our energy consumption and more importantly, save on our fuel bills.

One of the products we looked at was called “Remote Heating Control”, and it essentially lets you take greater control over your home’s central heating, and lets you adjust your home’s heating over the Internet.

Since our report in Show 76, British Gas has chosen us to take part in their “Don’t Take Our Word For It” campaign, where they install a Smart Home product into the houses of bloggers and podcasters, and let them try the system for themselves.

What is Remote Heating Control?

The system replaces your existing thermostat with a wireless controller. You can then program your boiler to switch off and on in accordance with a schedule that you create from a web browser. You can also adjust your heating from a smartphone, or even with a simple text message.

This means you can switch on the heat on the way home, or disable the system if you’re away from home for a while. The system will also alert you to any sudden temperature changes at home.

Last week, British Gas installed Remote Heating Control at Pete’s house, and he’ll be reporting on his progress in coming shows. In the meantime, FrequencyCast has put together a short video and audio file explaining how the system was installed, and what it’s all about.

Installing Remote Heating Control

To get a feel for the installation process, Pete took a few photos and videos, and spoke to the installer, a nice chap called Paul. We’ve released an audio podcast of our six minute feature, but we’ve also made a short video file, for your viewing pleasure.
