A torch with a USB socket? A step too far we thought, but there are a surprising number of reasons why a personalisable customisation torch has the advantage. We look at the myTorch range from Nextorch to see the light.
Programmable Torches?
You may think that sticking a USB socket on a torch is crazy, but if you rely on a torch for work or for your hobby, the idea isn’t that crazy:
- Set and save your preferred brightness
- One torch for multiple jobs – dim light for close-up work, or a powerful long-distance beam
- Add a setting for Strobe or SOS to help you to be found
- Different settings for different tasks – indoor, outdoor, close-up or distance signalling
- More than one torch user? Programme a fleet of torches with identical settings
The myTorch range
Nextorch has a range of programmable torches in its “myTorch” range. We got hands-on with the myTorch AA Smart Torch, which boasts the following:
- Brightness: 70 lumens
- 120 minutes of power from 1 x AA battery
- A beam distance of up to 80 metres
- Waterproof to 1 metre
- Fully programmable
- Can withstand an impact drop of up to 1 metre
- Luminous green dot on the base, to help track down the torch in the dark

Programming the myTorch
At the time of writing, we’ve been unable to get the software needed to program the torch, due to a missing page on the Nextorch site. Hopefully this will be back soon, and we can complete the review.
